Bastrop ISD announces new director of safety, security

Athan Schindler has been named director of safety and security for Bastrop Independent School District (ISD).

Schindler will oversee districtwide safety planning, emergency preparedness and risk mitigation efforts. He brings more than 20 years of experience in emergency management, organizational leadership and public safety. He previously worked as a public health educator with Travis County Health and Human Services.

TDCJ selects Cox as deputy director of facilities division

Everett Cox has been selected as deputy director of the facilities division for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).

Cox will oversee engineering, construction and facilities operations across the agency’s statewide portfolio. He has served TDCJ since Feb. 2017 and has held progressive leadership roles within the facilities division, including engineer V, engineer VI and director of engineering.

Rio Grande Valley MPO appoints new chair

John Cowen Jr. has been appointed chair of the Rio Grande Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).

Cowen will lead regional transportation planning efforts across the Rio Grande Valley. He currently serves as mayor of Brownsville. As chair, he plans to guide roadway infrastructure initiatives, expand transit options and advance multimodal connectivity throughout the region.

University of Houston system gains new regent following appointment

Patrick Fertitta has been appointed to the University of Houston Board of Regents.

Fertitta will help guide governance and strategic oversight for the university system. Fertitta brings experience in organizational management and board-level leadership to the position. His term is scheduled to expire Aug. 31, 2027.
